FOR KING COUNTY
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your Representative on the King County Council.
I am proud to represent a vibrant community including parts of Kent, Renton, Des Moines, SeaTac, Burien, Normandy Park and Tukwila. These are unprecedented times as we all feel challenged by this daunting public health crisis that can keep us away from our jobs, family members and friends.
Out of these challenges, we have the opportunity to reset our economy and include diverse voices at our decision-making tables. As an out gay elected official, I know first-hand how critical it is for voices that have historically been marginalized to be included in every policy making decision.
I have fought tough progressive fights including opposing giveaways to large corporations when that money is so badly needed for affordable housing and our social safety net. I have opposed spending tax dollars that are too focused on downtown Seattle and not fairly invested in South King County.
I have used my experience to deliver results on local issues, whether saving Dick's Drive-In on Pac-Hwy, funding a new YMCA in Kent, or establishing a criminal justice diversion program in Burien.
I'm excited to be your progressive voice on the King County Council. I would be honored to earn your vote again.
Authentic and accessible, Dave is immersed in the life of our diverse South King County community. His work on the council is informed by the voices and needs in our community—especially the voices of those facing injustice and those most often left behind.
Always looking forward, Dave believes the key to a healthy and safe future is to invest in our youth, root out institutional racism in our criminal justice system, and take aggressive steps to address climate change and restore salmon habitat in the Green River.
A trusted and experienced leader, Dave has been a strong and steady hand during the King County public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has proven himself to be effective and able to deliver results for our community.
WE KNOW THAT DAVE HAS OUR BACK.... SO WE'VE GOT HIS!
" I support Dave because he’s a progressive leader that takes time to listen to and truly values his constituents. Over the last few years I have enjoyed his leadership as a county councilmember, and also his eagerness to get out and get involved with the community. As an LGBTQIA+ organizer, I find that Dave has been a commendable advocate and presence for the county. Re-elect Dave for King County Council!"
Winter Cashman-Crane Renton LGBTQ Activist (them/they)
"“Dave genuinely cares about issues impacting the communities he serves, particularly communities of color that have historically not always been served well by government. Dave cares enough to go into those communities to hear directly from folks rather than assume he knows best what these communities want and need. Relationships take time to build and nurture; Dave has taken that time to earn the trust of the community and we need his continued leadership and experience in these challenging times.”
Dave shows up, listens to young people, and responds with action. He has worked with the community to pass progressive criminal justice reforms and secure funding for youth programs in South King County such as GloverEmpowerMentoring-GEM. He is always attentive to community concerns and has earned my respect and support.”
“Dave has been a part of the grassroots effort on criminal justice reform, organizing and advocating on behalf of South King county constituents. I’ve seen his passion for justice first-hand and I trust him to continue his efforts in delivering results for King County.”
“I have followed Dave Upthegrove's County Council activities since the beginning. Consistent feedback from people of all colors and backgrounds confirm Dave has served the diverse populations of South King County very well. I had the opportunity of meeting Dave once. The encounter was a meeting where Dave was sitting in a room with the leader and staff of a fledgling Black-operated nonprofit (at the nonprofit's office). Dave listened, provided feedback, and sought ways to help and support the organization. Subsequently, Dave's name has consistently came up within the organization and in the community in general, as a supporter for what is right, just, and for the common good. Dave is trusted, experienced, and effective. It's just hard to beat that folks.”
